Japan Sales: 2009 in Review

Postby webshark » Sun Jan 10, 2010 6:25 am

hello again. i have been mia for quite some time, but here i am again, finally back to give you a detailed look into how each console fared throughout 2009 (disclaimer: im rather drunk while writing this...)

so lets get started then
Spoiler for Standard Graphs:

ok, i know i call these standard graphs even tho i havent posted in like 3 months or so, but whatever. these are the graphs that i used to include every week when i still had time for forums.

anyways, what i notice about these graphs:
the wii was down almost a million year on year, and it still was the #1 console
ps3 had the best YOY increase, but just missed beating the wii for the year by about 200k
360 started the year way over 2008's numbers (i think it was about up 250% YOY at one point, but it really started to sputter out at the end of the year
PS2 had another year of halving its previous years sales. i really dont expect it to be on the lists much longer than this summer
DS was pretty much exacty even with last year only having about a 30 difference. in light of the wii's YOY performance in japan, i would think nintendo would be quite happy with this
PSP had the worst YOY decline other than the 10 yr old PS2. the go was basically stillborn in Japan, and the effect of the psp200 is now ancient history. PSP is just not doing well in japan right now.

but in other news, some recent marks have been achieved that deserve recognition:
wii passed 9.4m LTD this week
360 passed 3.2m LTD this week, while experiencing its best YTD sales of 373k in its entire lifetime
PSP passed 4.3m LTD this week, also experiencing its best YTD sales by far with 1.76m
ps2 just barely made the 200k mark for YTD sales. this console really is dead at this point....
DS passed 29m this week making it, once again, the best selling console of the year...
while the PSP was the second best selling system of the year, it did much worse than last year by suffering almost a 40% YOY decline.

and now, for special, end-of-year graphs!!!

"360 passed 3.2m LTD this week, while experiencing its best YTD sales of 373k in its entire lifetime"

There's something wrong with this statement. There haven't been anywhere near 3.2m 360s sold in Japan, lifetime or otherwise. Was this supposed to be PS3? If so, then the second half of the statement still makes no sense.

By golly I think the PS3 will beat the wii in sales next year.

Also, without the release of DQ9 I don't think the DS would have posted those huge numbers. Remeber how many DS's were sold when that game was released? Ridiculous amounts.

I think the PSP 4.3m LTD is wrong..

he's always intoxicated, so if he didn't do them then, he wouldn't do them at all.
